Dear Sweet Briar Alumna:

Greetings from the magnificent campus of Sweet Briar College. Today Sweet Briar is more alive and vibrant than it has been in many, many years. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Sweet Briar alumnae, students, parents, faculty and other stakeholders, we sit on the threshold of a new era of this great institution, an era in which Sweet Briar will be bigger and better than before.

It is my great honor and privilege to serve as the twelfth President of Sweet Briar College. Despite the turmoil of the last several months, we are one body committed to the education of strong, dedicated women.

We are gearing up for the 2015-2016 school year, with hundreds of students looking to return to campus and many inquiries already for next year’s Freshman class. Faculty have returned to campus in large numbers, and this next academic year looks to be our most challenging and exciting year yet.

I want to take this opportunity to invite you back to campus to see the alma mater you believe in and in which you have invested. I also ask that you take a moment and read the letter below from your fellow alumnae, Alice Cary Brown ’59 and Teresa Pike Tomlinson ’87, our new President of the Board of Directors. We would not be here today without the tremendous generosity of our alumnae, and we have an urgent challenge to meet the terms of our legal settlement. The need for that generosity has never been greater. We hope you will join us in this new-and perhaps the best-chapter in Sweet Briar’s history.

Very truly yours,

Phillip C. Stone

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
~ Mahatma Gandhi

Dear Sister Alumna:

Oh, what we have accomplished together! We have saved our beloved Sweet Briar College from the threat of closure, just as Indiana Fletcher Williams would have expected us to do. We are the women she envisioned us to be: Women of an indomitable strength and spirit.

We have terrific new College leadership in our President Phil Stone and a new, energized and committed board. We have been called the “best known college in the country” by the media because of our successful David versus Goliath effort. We have dynamic, impassioned alumnae and a formidable reputation for turning out women who insist on leading impactful lives. With both the public and private sectors clamoring for effective woman leaders, the Sweet Briar College experience has never been more needed than it is now.

Yet, we need you to make this historic movement complete.

Thousands of gifts were made during this Saving Sweet Briar journey. We have met our $2.5 million first litigation settlement milestone, and more. We are on course to meet the next two milestones over the next 60-days for the total $12 million alumnae and stakeholder investment in Sweet Briar’s future. But, we have much work to do. For too long, many alumnae were not engaged or effectively cultivated to give to our alma mater. That is no longer true. The tragic threat of losing Sweet Briar College has yielded new impassioned alumnae donors and rekindled the fire of our prior faithful. And, now we need you.

We are asking you today to Rise to the Challenge by making a meaningful gift to Saving Sweet Briar, Inc., a tax deductible, non-profit corporation, which has waged this battle, won this war and must supply the College with the financial flexibility it will need to be successful. These funds will go to the many operational expenses of the College. Here’s how you can ensure our success during this important transition phase:

  • Convert any prior pledge today by mailing a check to the Campaign Office, by wire transfer of cash or by transfer of stock to our brokerage account.
  • To donate online, please visit:
  • Accelerate your pledge amount by paying all or most of the total pledge in the next few weeks.
  • If you have yet to make a gift or pledge, do so today.

As Faculty scramble to return to the lectern this fall, and prior/prospective students are inspired by the tenacity and resourcefulness demonstrated from Sweet Briar alumnae across the country, we must invest in Sweet Briar’s immediate and long-term success. These next two months no doubt will be rigorous, exhausting and-with your significant financial contribution-ultimately rewarding.

We are making history. Let’s make it together.
Onward Vixens,

Alice Cary Brown, ’59 Teresa Pike Tomlinson, ’87

Sweet Briar Employees. My company is doing a giveaway of 10k to a college. Even if you have nothing to do with ticketing enter anyway! I sat in on a marketing meeting this week and they said there were not many entries because everyone at the tradeshow a thought they had to be box office employees to win, the only requirement is that you must be an employee of the institution. Pass this around to SBC Employees!

Apparently the odds are really good to win $10,000 for the school. So, please, if you are employed by Sweet Briar participate!

Help, please. ’97 would like to raffle off some of our cow tag stash – either as a straight raffle (buy tickets, where ticket $ = donation) or a hybrid, where donation receipts earn you a raffle ticket. My Judge Judy/Law & Order law degree isn’t going to cut it. Can an actual lawyer please help us determine a legit way to do this? Thanks in advance.…/Charitable%20Gaming%20Regul…

My friend and colleague, Laura Lenhert, is working on pottery again, so those of you who were interested may now contact her and place your orders. What a great way to commemorate 7/2/15! She can duplicate what she so graciously created for me, or, you can send her a photo of what you would like, and she can do that for you. I have had her do fraternity/sorority houses for my kids, houses, and even my daughter’s bridal bouquet as a wedding gift. She can also personalize on the back. Laura will make a contribution to SSB at a later date based on the number of orders that either reference my name, or SSB. I encourage you to reach out to Laura:

Ladies –

A Sweet Briar alumna needs our help!

Kaeden, the daughter of Gwendolyn Hickey Babcock ’95 was hospitalized in April for seizures that cause respiratory arrest and paralysis. She spent two weeks in the hospital – much of it in ICU – and was in two different hospitals. She was making progress but the seizures continued in June and caused her to be hospitalized again. She has been at Hershey’s Med in PA and now has been transferred to Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore for six weeks of rehab while Gwendolyn will be staying at the Marriott Residence.

There are two ways you can help

1) Donate some of your Marriott points so she can continue to stay at the Marriott Residence while her daughter is getting the treatment she needs.

2) Donate at to help them with their medical bills.  Any amount is appreciated.

You can PM Sarah Betz Bucciero on Facebook if you need information to donate Marriott points (she has a contact at the hotel who is facilitating things for them).

From Sarah – Thank you all in advance for your kindness and for generosity. I know first hand how difficult it is to be in a new city and hospital with a sick child. But I also know how incredibly important it is to feel the love of your Sweet Briar sisters! wink emoticon…/bwihb-residence-inn-baltimore-…/…
