SBC is looking for successful alumnae who majored in different fields, and who are currently working, so SBC can highlight successful career paths for majors as part of the sbc.edu website upgrade. This information is a vital communications piece to help us make sure SBC is seen by prospective students as “career focused.”
Please submit your short biography paragraph, a head shot photo, and include your major, and any graduate work you have undertaken as part of your career post-SBC.

Sweet Briar College has started a new tradition

Traditions have a special place at Sweet Briar. This year, we decided that there needed to be a new one — a tradition that honors every single student as she begins her journey at Sweet Briar. Our first Daisy Ceremony was held at the end of move-in day on Friday, with President Stone and the board of directors handing each brand-new Vixen a daisy to mark her initiation as a Sweet Briar woman.

“Hey there Ladies, I am passing on info regarding a fundraising campaign for cancer research. Claire Shaw, one of our little sisters, just passed away after a valiant four year battle. She was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma after completing her freshman year at Sweet Briar. It would be awesome for her family to feel the support of her Sweet Briar sisters during this grief-stricken time.”

“Welcome to the new school year… 144 odd freshman and 30 something sophomores, not to mention amazing juniors, seniors, and turning point students.. and about 10 international students – fantastic… all thanks to the hard work of the admissions office and Marcia Thom Kaley. Being on campus this weekend was amazing to see the hustle and bustle of move-in day with some amazing young women leaders. And, of course, spending time talking to those who make SBC a stellar institution of higher education – the faculty! Then there is the BOD who met this weekend – thank you for all your hard work. I know you’ve been churning to work hard on our year coming up and especially on governance as promised back in May/June. The article attached says it all. This is the year of hard work.. of ensuring we have strong governance…. shared governance with faculty and staff who are fairly represented, where faculty can work on creating the liberal arts/humanities / social sciences curriculum for 2026 and beyond…. transparency, integrity, solid rubrics and criteria that epitomize what makes a strong SBC trustee.. and revamped bylaws that ensure the BOD is not self-perpetuating… this is the advent of a new era and we are recreating ourselves..taking control, being leaders at a College for Women.”

As we launch headlong into the 2016-2017 academic year as of 130pm this afternoon, I submit for your reading pleasure the following. Note especially Domestic Science on page 56. I read the programs of study leading up to page 56 and feel confident I could have been a Sweet Briar woman, even in 1906, despite what would have surely been poor marks in Domestic Science.

Posted on Facebook by Amy Leigh Campbell – a really cool idea
Putting this out into the fb universe because my wild, brilliant collection of friends never fail me —
I want a vending machine for a special project at Sweet Briar. It’s not for snacks or drinks — it will be for fun, random gifts for students from alumnae. Cool, right?
Speaking of cool, ideally it will not be a refrigerated machine since I don’t want to waste electricity. Even one of the old cigarette machines where you pull the lever would work for this purpose and might even be preferable since they have less electronic parts.
So please put your thinking caps on and pass along my request to anyone you know who might donate one to my crazy dream. Thank you!!!

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNAE ALLIANCE
Critical need at Sweet Briar! We need your help!
The tennis courts at Sweet Briar were last resurfaced 12 years ago, but best practices among collegiate facilities call for resurfacing every 7 to 9 years. Maintenance was limited to patching any problem spots, but patching is not proper maintenance for the long term. As a result, water has penetrated many of the courts as far below the surface as 12 inches. This has caused foundational cracks, surface cracks, dead spots, and separation between the topcoat and the foundational layers of the courts. The courts now have to be rebuilt.

Rebuilding the tennis courts is a critical need for Sweet Briar not only for ODAC intercollegiate play but for rebuilding auxiliary revenue through camps and clinics in the off-season. Sweet Briar hosted a condensed version of Dennis van Der Meer’s adult tennis camp this summer; however, any expansion of the camps is in jeopardy due to the condition of the courts. The total sum needed for this project is $275,000. We have already received a $50,000 challenge gift from an anonymous donor to complete the rebuilding of the courts, and other donors have provided an additional $9,000 to date. Former tennis teammates are reaching out to each other to raise the remaining $216,000, but gifts are welcome from all of our Sweet Briar alumnae and friends. Work on the courts must begin before the winter months so that competitions and camps can resume in the spring; therefore, we must reach our goal by October 1, 2016. If the courts are not rebuilt in time for the spring season, our tennis team will have to hold its home matches at one of Amherst’s public schools.

If you have questions about this project or would like to make a gift of $10,000 or more, please contact Mary Pope M. Hutson ’83 at 434-381-6131. Click on the link for photos of the tennis courts in the latest Briar Wire.
