My friend and colleague, Laura Lenhert, is working on pottery again, so those of you who were interested may now contact her and place your orders. What a great way to commemorate 7/2/15! She can duplicate what she so graciously created for me, or, you can send her a photo of what you would like, and she can do that for you. I have had her do fraternity/sorority houses for my kids, houses, and even my daughter’s bridal bouquet as a wedding gift. She can also personalize on the back. Laura will make a contribution to SSB at a later date based on the number of orders that either reference my name, or SSB. I encourage you to reach out to Laura:

A CALL FOR HELP FROM SARAH BETZ BUCCIERO

A Sweet Briar alumna needs our help!

Kaeden, the daughter of Gwendolyn Hickey Babcock ’95 was hospitalized in April for seizures that cause respiratory arrest and paralysis. She spent two weeks in the hospital – much of it in ICU – and was in two different hospitals. She was making progress but the seizures continued in June and caused her to be hospitalized again. She has been at Hershey’s Med in PA and now has been transferred to Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore for six weeks of rehab.

She is currently staying at the Ronald McDonald house.  However, as you all know medical bills will be outrageous even with a good insurance plan.

So please donate at

http://www.gofundme.com/kaeden

to help them with their medical bills.  Any amount is appreciated.

From Sarah – Thank you all in advance for your kindness and for generosity. I know first hand how difficult it is to be in a new city and hospital with a sick child. But I also know how incredibly important it is to feel the love of your Sweet Briar sisters!

((HUGS!!))

Hey y’all! My few remaining crew are helping me with the rest of this documentary but we still need help! Since we are planning a box office release, we really need help funding it! Please just spread the word!! We have less than a month to ensure we hit every deadline!! Thanks to our SBC connections, we have been able to secure screens internationally for a 6 week run starting January 1, 2016 (right when seniors are looking at colleges ;D)! I’d really like all the money the film makes to go right back into Sweet Briar for future students and staff! With that being said, we still have a TON of money to raise and only 30 days to do it – so share the links, spread the love and let the show begin!!

Any questions, comments and suggestions – please feel free to direct them my way!

Managing Expectations by Dan Gottlieb

Managing expectations…

In early May, I spoke to alumna in Raleigh/Durham about Sweet Briar and ended with my projections for enrollment and budget deficits should Sweet Briar stay open. In terms of budget deficits, I assumed we would pay of around $8 million dollar in bonds immediately, which I don’t think we are doing, but otherwise I think the projections still are reasonable in terms of what to expect if all is going well. For this year, I projected around 210 students, which includes 40 first years. I assumed the new students would receive the same amount of financial aid as did other recent classes. Going forward, I assumed that new classes would creep up from around 200-230, retention would stay as it has been, and that we would collect more in tuition revenue from new students than we recently had been (but no more from returning students and from the Fall 2015 first years through their graduation). Here are the graphs. Although next year’s incoming class is obviously very important, barring something extreme, I think it will be Fall 2017 when we really know whether we are on the right track or need to make further adjustments.

Internships at no cost to the college

Hi Kim-

There¹s often a divide with internships where only upper or middle class kids can afford them; between hours and commuting costs there¹s often little time for side jobs, making unpaid internships out of reach for some families.

Yet, this doesn¹t need to always be the reality. Joan McLachlan of Internship Quest knows the ins and outs of every form of internship and knows how to teach kids to get creative with creating opportunities for themselves internships that are really jobs and in places kids might not expect to look.

Additionally, kids who start out with a high school internship could help direct their college path, resulting in fewer major changes and therefore less spend on education before graduation.

Could I interest you in a conversation with Joan to discuss more?

Thank you,

Meg Callaghan

JOAN E. McLACHLAN launched her career with internships almost thirty years ago in New York City and has been working with students and school internship programs ever since. She is the coauthor of Get An Internship and Make the Most of It: Practical Information for High School and Community College Students, Internships for Today¹s World: A Practical Guide For High Schools and Community Colleges, and is the director of Internship Quest, LLC, a company that provides consulting services and materials for quality internship programs.

  A MESSAGE FROM LISA AUMILLER

Sweet Briar Sisters and Supporters…….After all your support and love and work this past 10 weeks…….I regret to inform everyone the America’s favorite veterinarian contest has been cancelled. I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to vote and putting up with my daily reminders. It was fun a lot of fun. Unfortunately, an outside group got involved and started bullying the candidates. I didn’t want to share what was happening because it was more fun to share the fun memes and the good vibrations with everyone. I regret the AVMF’s decision and I wish the competition would have continued. However, they did what they felt was best.

I love you all and I wish I could have represented Sweet Briar on a national level.

I cant thank you all enough for all your support.

Anyone who contributes will be credited in the book.  She is currently working on a coffee table book which she plans to sell for $25 with all proceeds going to restore Sweet Briar.

Kim is asking especially for some photos with the pink dogwoods in bloom, some from Monument Hill of the campus, and some of a May Day weekend with the hoop skirts, etc.

Please send high resolution color photos of SBC any era and any majors or activities to

Kcoolone@aol.com

100 percent of proceeds to SBC…I want as many alumnae involved as possible because that is what it took to save Sweet Briar and we want the world to know how special we are.  Everyone who contributes photos or comments will be credited.  Please help…Books are my business and I want this to be the best of all because it is for Sweet Briar.

Interested in volunteering? Join our Facebook group The Sweet Life Documentary – crew and friends!

Sweet Briar

Highlight from the last Board meeting – by Teresa Tomlinson

Some Highlights from Board of Directors Meeting

The Board of Directors met in a retreat format on campus Thursday evening until noon Saturday. Highlights of the meeting include:

At the direction of the board chair, Teresa Pike Tomlinson, the board conducted the first paperless board meeting in the history of the college. Through the good work of Dawn Gatewood and Aaron Mahler, directors were able to access even lengthy documents during and prior to the meeting.

Except one person, who was held up unexpectedly for business reasons, all directors attended the entire retreat.

The Board acknowledged with regret the resignation of Jim Fabiani for health reasons and elected Allison Stemmons Simon ’63 as a new member of the board.

Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Commission on Colleges of SACS, presented a seminar for the board on the Commission’s accreditation requirements and provided helpful advice on the respective roles of the board and the administration in governance.

The board acknowledged that some donors feel deeply that their endowment funds now being released from restriction by Virginia’s Attorney General should continue to be used for the purposes designated by the donors. The board voted to restrict such funds to the intended wishes of the donors and to require approval by ¾ of the board for any future
changes in their status.

President Stone presented his State of the College Report.

The board received reports from members of the President’s Council and engaged in extended conversations about finances, fundraising and enrollment.

The College’s new auditors, BDO, presented an outline of the annual auditing process now underway.

The College’s investment counselors, Prime Buchholz, presented a report on the performance of the investments of the college.

Ruth McCambridge, Editor in Chief of the Nonprofit Quarterly made a presentation on current trends in nonprofits, particularly on matters of governance.

The board met over breakfast with the Faculty Executive Committee for a discussion on governance, open communications and other matters.

The board was treated to the first meals served by Sweet Briar Dining Services under new management by Parkhurst. Everyone agreed enthusiastically: thumbs up!

At the end of the meeting, members of the campus community, friends of the college, members of the governing boards of the Town of Amherst and Amherst County and other special guests joined the board for lunch on the Upper Quad on a glorious, sunny day.

So please donate at

to help them with their medical bills.  Any amount is appreciated.

From Sarah – Thank you all in advance for your kindness and for generosity. I know first hand how difficult it is to be in a new city and hospital with a sick child. But I also know how incredibly important it is to feel the love of your Sweet Briar sisters!

((HUGS!!))

A message from General K.

From BOD Vice Chair:
YOUR Board is on Campus and working hard…but seeing what has been accomplished over the past two months has been truly inspiring. The returning students are already appearing on the campus and are simply multiplying the feeling of excitement. Having spent 35+ years in the military, I’ve seen some focused people but the Alumnae of Sweet Briar College stand second to none!!! Each of you should feel extremely proud of what you have accomplished. We are not out of the woods yet and certainly need your help and support but the school year is about to start and that is a direct result of your devotion to the college. I salute each of you🎉🎉🎉.

VIXENS HELPING VIXENS

Swreet Briar

A message from Brooke Linville

The end is near! There’s a light at the end of the tunnel! The finish line is in sight! Whichever metaphor you choose, the reality is that September 1 is upon us, and our biggest job to ensuring the legacy of Sweet Briar for future generations will be over (::Brooke jumps in the air!::) Yes, there is MUCH work to be done to rebuild this school, but we have crossed a major hurdle.

It is important that we finish… and FINISH STRONG. Let’s show the world that we do have the financial ability to reach the milestones put forward, that we can sustain this college, and that we can give her the needed resources to get through the next couple of years during that rebuilding process.

I know many of you have risen to the challenges put forward, and I am ever grateful for the trust and confidence you have placed in me by embracing those calls to action. In the next two weeks, those calls will continue to help us cross that finish line strong. I am coming to you today not with a plea to change your photo or donate the cost of a coffee. I am coming to you to ask you to dig deep, to contemplate, to reflect, and then to give. We didn’t give up. This place has meaning to us all. We fought. And we fought for a reason. What can you give today that will contribute to that legacy?

Thank you all for your continued support. We are thousands strong and have over and over proven the value of a Sweet Briar education. There is nothing that WE cannot do.

VIXENS HELPING VIXENS

((HUGS!!))

Sarah

Here are the details:

Sweet Briar Vixens!! Please take the time to review this and possibly vote…..I graduated Sweet Briar in 1996 and In case you dont know SBC has an amazing acceptance into veterinary schools. It is a total guerilla marketing move….but consider helping make a SBC grad America’s Favorite Veterinarian. If I win I will be a national spokesperson for the AVMF for 1 year AND SURE AS SHOOTIN’ I will parade Sweet Briar as‪#‎MyTopCollege

Intrigued? Here is the scoop! Thanks Ladies!

Please vote daily until September 1st and Please Share!

I was lucky enough to be nominated as 1 of the 20 vets for America’s Favorite Veterinarian by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. This is the charitable arm of the AVMA. I am the only NJ vet, one of two mobile vets AND the ONLY Sweet Briar graduate (Holla Holla) . This would be great recognition for HousePaws Mobile Veterinary Service and all we do for the community. If I win I get to be the national spokesperson for the AVMF for one year AND I get bragging rights. This would be so huge if a mobile vet one! Please vote and share!!

Interested in volunteering? Join our Facebook group The Sweet Life Documentary – crew and friends!
