A Message from Kim Cool ’62

With every word and idea that comes from our wonderful president, Phillip Stone, it is so obvious that Sweet Briar will once again be what it was meant to be….one of the great women’ s liberal arts colleges ever, compared to all those that were as well as those few that remain.
That my latest book “Sweet Briar College …in Perpetuity” entered the printing process today and hopefully will be ready for reunion is so exciting. The first checks and orders also arrived today … another omen. All the proceeds will go to Sweet Briar. The book is hard cover, full color, landscape format, with photos and quotes from nearly all SBC generations. The price is $24.95 plus $5 for shipping and, in Florida, 7 percent sales tax.
Order from Kim Cool, 312 Shore Road, Venice, FL 34285. I will have hip replacement surgery in mid May which may delay shipping of books from Florida but I hope to have a few cases on campus for reunion sales. That depends on the printer working a miracle so say prayers for that outcome. The initial printing is 1,000 copies for the first edition.

SWEET WEEKS AT SWEET BRIAR

079352b9-be71-489d-8148-cb61a918d895

Dear Friends of Sweet Briar,
The picture above tells a great deal, but not all, about the inaugural Sweet Weeks 2015. Last August, alumnae, students, fathers, sons, sisters, mothers, brothers, sweethearts and spouses arrived on campus to work — skilled and unskilled (mainly the latter), local and international, young and not so young (but still looking good). We were energetic and effective. It was estimated that by pitching in and coming together to refresh Sweet Briar’s campus during Sweet Weeks of Service last year, we saved our beloved school tens of thousands of dollars on repairs, maintenance, and beautification.
But the unexpected bonus was the sheer joy that this service brought to each of us. For many of us, not since living in the dorms have we had the opportunity to interact with such interesting and diverse people with a common goal. During the day (and most of the night) we swapped life stories and skill sets: Sweet Briar Camp with no classes. . . which brings us to the photo above. We were the four who signed up for all 3 work weeks so we were housed together in Green Village. We represented the classes of 1970 and 2018 (alumnae in training). Did the 48 years between our graduation dates impede our compatibility? Not a bit — we formed fast and enduring friendships. Viva Sweet Briar sisterhood. . .apparently blind to age!
So, if you came last year, you know what a great time we had–if you didn’t, don’t miss out again! Come join us for all or any part of the 2016 Sweet Weeks: May 16-25 and August 1-19. No special talents required, but a large capacity for fun is an asset. We hope to see you there!
— Annabeth Griffin ’18, Ann Gateley ’70, Kate Schlech ’70, and Maggy O’Donnell ’18

ALUMNAE ALLIANCE

We are well on our way to reach our goal of $10 Million by June 30.  According to the Briar Wire we are more than half way there.
There are a number of ways you can help reach the $10 Million.  Among others there will be a worldwide online silent auction graciously spearheaded by Norma Valentine.  She is looking for volunteers to help.  So if you would like to help please let me know and I will forward the message.

The Alumnae Alliance is requesting that all alumnae sign up on Alumnifire.  Alumnifire is an alumni run social media platform to share and connect.
Currently there are about 1,500 Vixens who have signed up on Alumnifire.
image001
According to Deborah Elkins and Margaretta Colangelo “we can now highlight that we have a ratio of 15:1 for alumnae to students using Alumnifire… with these alumnae ready and willing to provide professional expertise, advice, mentoring, jobs and internship opportunities to the 104 students already registered in Alumnifire (104 = 4 1st year +25 2nd year + 23 juniors +52 seniors). WOW! And we’re the #1 women’s college network on Alumnifire.
Below are instructions on how to connect and articles with more information on Alumnifire.

Charity for girls in Chattanooga-Cleveland, TN needs a new space. My cousin started a non-profit last year which provides FREE clothing to at-risk teen girls, called “Giving Threads.” Her charity has been evicted from her present space and rent was $300/month that included utilities. She has to move in 14 days and needs help finding a new space. If you know of anyone that can help, please post a comment and I will pass along to her

Former Sweet Briar student, Claire Shaw, has had Ewing’s Sarcoma and is continuing treatment for relapsed MDS/leukemia. Her family needs to rent their Maine summer house while Claire continues her treatment in one of several clinical trials.
Shaw House Somesville
Built in 1924, and completely restored in 2007, our coastal farmhouse is the perfect island get-away. Centrally located at the head of Somes Sound it has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a back ‘secret staircase.’ Though we’re on the well traveled Route 102 we have an acre of land, a small pond, and a Finish wood-fired sauna in the back yard, which is surrounded by extensive acreage.
Perhaps this rental might be of interest to you? Thank you

Kartina Balding Bills requests your positive vibes and prayers for her friend and roommate and SBC alumna Cassandra Lynn Thomas -“my very BEST GOOD FRIEND, my 4 year roommate from college, my soul sister, Cassie, is in the hospital in FLA w/ a recently discovered “mass” in her very smart head…she is a wife to Tim, momma to Lexi and Timmy, superb Veterinarian. This world needs her daggumit. We love her and. Need all y’all to love her and pray for her too. Fervently. Unceasingly. I am sure we will attack whatever this dang thing is in our dogged, determined vixen way…. please….however you do so, please.pray!”

Alumna AP Conrad, a civilian deployed with the US military has this simple request:
Ladies, morale can get pretty low in a deployed environment and it’s a really big deal to receive mail. I remember last deployment eagerly gathering around care packages bc we were so excited for someone when they got letters from home and wanted to share in each other’s joy. Some of the guys I’ll be with never receive mail. I posted about this a few months ago when I first mentioned I’d be heading out and a lot of you, I was truly touched, wanted to answer the call to send cards of encouragement, etc. I even recall a couple teachers saying they wanted to get their classrooms involved.
I’m going to Vixen the hell out of this deployment!!! (Um, did I just make up a tshirt??!!)
Please send packages to Paige Conrad, 850 Sumner Drive, Apt #9; Fayetteville, NC 28303. That’s actually the address of my boss who will then make sure mail gets put on the plane. It takes about two weeks for stuff to reach us.
Things we need – are tissues and Zyrtec for allergies (the dust is awful). Really good salad dressings. Good/fun snack foods. Scented candles (it smells here). I can make sure that letters and cards are distributed throughout camp.

Sarah Betz Bucciero needs your help to fund the SBC scholarship in memory of her son Carter.

From John Edward Ashbrook in regards to his history class traveling to Europe this summer.

Hello everyone. I have some current students who want to attend my summer abroad course on the world wars and the Holocaust. We will be visiting battlefields in France, Belgium, Italy, and Poland, and Dachau, Majdanek, and Auschwitz between June 6 and July 3. The problem is lack of funding. I suggested they speak with the financial aid office first. But if they cannot get funding in that way, does anyone in this group have suggestions about how they could raise the money by March 10 or so? The trip per student is $3000. Airfare is separate but running about $1200. SBC alumna and friends pay $3500. Any ideas or advice is much appreciated! Thanks, John Ashbrook, SBC HISTORY

Breaking – Breaking – Breaking – Breaking – Breaking
A letter from Sweet Briar College President Stone

c113c3e7-7b8c-45d0-b238-9276fe4d4260
April 23, 2016
[Dear Sweet Briar Alumna]
The Board of Directors just concluded its meetings on campus. The Board confirmed that the college continues to experience great success as we move to good health and strength. Among the items handled by the board was the matter of leadership for the college in the years ahead. As you know, I was named president in the settlement agreement to help get the college back in operation and on the road to full recovery. Fortunately, with your help and the tremendous support from alumnae and friends of the college, we have had a remarkable school year. That sets the stage for us to plan the next stage of envisioning and planning. That planning invites a transition to new leadership both to assist with the envisioning and in helping to execute the plans that result. Below, you will find a press release issued by the Sweet Briar College Board of Directors today. It includes an announcement that over the next many months we will conduct the process of hiring the next Sweet Briar president. It is my intention to ensure an orderly transition and pass the baton of leadership as of July 1, 2017.

As you can imagine, this is a bittersweet announcement. I have come to love Sweet Briar in my time here, so I shall miss very much my engagement in this community and the opportunity to continue playing a role in the renewal and revitalization of this college. I have so many friends here. Together we are making history, and we have another year ahead of us to continue making history. I am happy that I was able to play a role in putting the college back on sound footing after the attempted closing. Now the time has come to envision the future, and that will also be an exciting chapter in the life of the college.

Because so much has been achieved in such a short time, an orderly change in leadership is now possible. We should all celebrate the opportunity for a new leader, working with the board and the entire college community, to help develop a vision for the future of the college. Stage I, the rescue operation, produced a miracle: The Women of Sweet Briar saved their college! Stage II, moving the college from the brink of closure back into full operation, has also been extraordinary. It has been wonderful to be a part of that effort. Now Stage III: envisioning and planning, must be done with the same level of passion and commitment, and more miracles will follow.

All of you have been so kind to me and so supportive of the college during this year of revitalization. For that, I express my sincere gratitude. I am absolutely certain that Sweet Briar’s best days lie ahead. All those who love her must continue to support her. I know I can count on your continued assistance during the rest of my tenure. Thank you.

Warm regards,
Phillip C. Stone
President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sweet Briar College announces a year of successes and next steps
Board to evaluate planning process and commence search for permanent leadership
SWEET BRIAR, Va. (April 23, 2016) – Less than one year after the failed attempt to close Sweet Briar College, board members and President Phil Stone concluded their sixth on-campus board meeting and celebrated a year of achievement beyond their original expectations – as well as new opportunities and next steps.
“We were all hopeful of the possibilities,” Chairwoman Teresa Pike Tomlinson ’87 said. “We knew Sweet Briar had a strong foundation and a lot to offer young women in today’s world, but few expected we would come this far this fast.”
President Phil Stone agreed, recalling his first full day on campus.
“From the day I walked into dark, lonely campus buildings to this day of a celebration of a spring semester, with a jam-packed board meeting and the student’s Spring Fling event tonight, ours has been a remarkable journey of human exceptionalism and perseverance.”
The board and president provided a sampling of accomplishments so far:
  • Meeting the court-ordered settlement terms ahead of deadlines and concluding the litigation process that followed the announcement to close
  • Opening the College for fall semester on time and without incident for nearly 250 students who returned to campus with only a few weeks notice
  • Re-establishing its sports and signature equestrian and junior year abroad programs
  • Becoming the first women’s college to be affiliated with BRAID (Building Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity), which is a consortium of colleges and universities from across the nation working to increase the percentage of women and students of color in computer sciences
  • Adopting the most fiscally responsible budget in the last 20 years
  • Predicting that it will end the 2016 fiscal year (FY) on June 30 without having to access the $16 million in restricted funds freed by the state attorney general
  • Funding the College’s operation through May 15 without having to access a penny of its endowment fund
  • Announcing that it is on course to raise the first $10 million of its $30 million Next is Now campaign by June 30 as the College to date has:
    • Raised more than $6 million of its $10 million FY2016 goal;
    • Raised over $500,000 in one “day of giving,” followed one week later by raising over $600,000 in another day of giving; and
    • Broken the College’s all-time giving record in this fiscal year
  • Engaging our alumnae from across the country to attend more than 500 college fairs for prospective students and implementing state-of-the-art recruitment techniques to yield the:
    • Largest number of applications (nearly 1,400) in the College’s history; and
    • Highest number of acceptances in recent College history.
  • Forging an alliance with The National Center for Sustainable Development (NCSD) to attract exemplary young Chinese women leaders to the Class of 2020 and beyond
  • Being named to both Forbes 2016 lists of Best Value Schools and Best Value Private Colleges
  • Transitioning from interim executive staff positions to permanent administrative leadership in departments and divisions throughout the College
  • The passage of new board by-laws that affirm a belief in both best governance practices and the fiscal stability of the College in perpetuity
As Sweet Briar looks forward to its future, the board and president will assess a land management plan as part of the long-range vision for the College. The board also will appoint a selection committee and hire a search firm to begin the succession process for the next permanent president to take the helm of Sweet Briar College on July 1, 2017.
Stone assumed the presidency in July 2015 to help steer the College to stability over the first couple of years following the conclusion of court proceedings. He will be instrumental in the search and transition process.
“We could not have had a better leader to cut this path for us and set the stage for our future success,” Tomlinson said. “The fact that Phil Stone committed two years of his otherwise full life and professional practice to come be a part of Sweet Briar history has been a godsend. We are now thankful to have his expertise as we transition to our next chapter and, fortunately, we have over a year’s time in which to do it.”
Stone added, “This next year will be one of our busiest ever. After this extraordinary past year, I cannot wait to see what our future holds.”

Great news! How the Vixens Saved the School is now available in a French/English edition. Sweet Briar College professor Dr. Marie-Thérèse Killiam Maite Killiam and three of her students, Hannah Beall, Arienna Rebecca Groves and Megan Johnston beautifully translated the story into French. And with the original English text on each page, it’s perfect for exposing children to a new language while they read about Vicky and her fellow renardettes.

VIXENS HELPING VIXENS

A message from Evangeline Taylor
Charity for girls in Chattanooga-Cleveland, TN needs a new space. My cousin started a non-profit last year which provides FREE clothing to at-risk teen girls, called “Giving Threads.” Her charity has been evicted from her present space and rent was $300/month that included utilities. She has to move in 14 days and needs help finding a new space. If you know of anyone that can help, please post a comment and I will pass along to her
–My cousin also has two 17 year old girls whom I’m trying to recruit to SBC smile emoticon
Blog from today:

This message is from LEA BENNET asking for your help

“Carter’s Scholarship Update: I officially learned today that there is approximately $20k in the scholarship and so I need to raise about $30k more to have it endowed at the $50k level. This scholarship will go to any student directly impacted by cancer (self, sibling, or parent). I will be donating all of my commissions from Rodan and Fields sales this year to the scholarship”

You can help Sarah by purchasing Rodan and Fields items from her.

 THE CHARITABLE VIXEN

Kari Shipley ’76 has a request to all alumnae:  Next time you buy water in bottles consider saving the bottle caps for CAPS OF LOVE, an American charity that funds children’s wheelchairs.  Please remember that the bottle caps must be separated by grade. Thank you!

Please complete the interest form here
to get more information about Sweet Weeks of Service!

Registration is live! Sweet Weeks of Service is May 16 – May 25 and August 1-19. On-campus accommodations and meals will be available. There will be a wide range of projects, both indoors and outdoors. Sign up today!

VIXENS HELPING VIXENS

This message is from LEA BENNET asking for your help

Thank you!

ALUMNAE ALLIANCE

VIXENS HELPING VIXENS

Thank you!

Posted on Facebook by Tom Hartman in regards to the resignation of General Krulak as vice chair of the Sweet Briar Board

General Charles Krulak Steps Off Sweet Briar Board

Don’t want anyone to miss this.

Alice Dixon : General Chuck Krulak resigned due to health issues…he feels that the College is in great hands with President Stone, and that things are moving in a very positive direction…The General is still involved though…in fact, I sought his advice on a matter just last week or so. He is happily making himself available to us if we wish to consult him. To celebrate him upon his resignation might be appropriate…he was a tremendous member of the BOD. But then every departure would have to be acknowledged or celebrated. Incidentally, there have been a few departures–health reasons, going to work at the College, personal reasons–but not one single member has resigned due to a lack in confidence in our success or the direction in which we are moving. Semper Fi General!

Chuck Krulak: Alice is spot on!! I consider myself a huge Fan of SBC and will always be pulling for the Students, Faculty, Staff, and Alumna of the College. My special respect goes to the Alumna who stepped up and literally SAVED SWEETBRIAR. I will never forget their fighting spirit and would only urge EVERYONE to continue to pull TOGETHER. The Board will never get it “perfect”…there will always be something that will prove to be an irritant to someone BUT, NEVER DOUBT FOR A MINUTE THE SINCERITY OF THE BOARD AND THEIR DESIRE TO MAKE THE COLLEGE PROUD!! I am always a phone call away and ready to help. Phil Stone is a remarkable President and had the College headed onward and upward. As you all know, I was the President of BIRMINGHAM -SOUTHERN COLLEGE (The Panthers) and my heart will always be found on the Hilltop in that City but, a close second is the Vixens at SBC.

Full text of SBC Bulletin Alumnae News 1930-31
Article 13: Do not need to read all this archive, but I just love that junior year study abroad started in 1930-31 “based on a University of Delaware Model” with study at the U of Nancy and in Paris at the Universite de Paris and the Ecoles Libres de Sciences Politiques
Actually this news bulletin is still an interesting model for wide ranging Alumnae News, including recent additions to the library! A book on riding dated 1854 including this quote “no lady of taste gallops on the road!”   Another nee book by Woodrow Wilson….fun….

These locations were chosen for their beauty and convenience, as it was felt that If changing social customs and local conditions warranted the official recognition of smoking, it must take place under dignified circumstances.”

MAY 17, 2016

Please join us on Tues. May 17th from 12-1:30 at Lynchurg College’s Burton Dining Hall!

We are excited to announce our first SBC: Central Va. Alumnae and Friends community service event! Please get decked out in your best pink and green outfit and join alumnae and friends of the college at our Sweet Briar table(s) for this luncheon in support of Mariam’s House! This will be a wonderful time for the SBC community to socialize, network  and help other women all at the same time. At SBC we learned that strong women build each other up!

Miriam’s House is dedicated to ending homelessness through the empowerment of women and families. They offer two housing programs designed to limit the length of time families experience homelessness and quickly return homeless families to the community. Miriam’s House works collaboratively with a number of community agencies to ensure that our clients receive the best and most appropriate services available.

Please join us for this special occasion! The annual luncheon is Mariam’s house biggest event of the year. Everyone enjoys a wonderful meal, informative program, and the chance to win some great raffle and door prizes as we celebrate the women and families who have built “a foundation for the future” through the programs at Miriam’s House.

Luncheon tickets are $40 each, and are available for purchase online.  Click here,  http://www.miriamshouseprogram.org/online-ticket-sales.html,                                       to purchase your tickets online today! Be sure to indicate that your “table captain” is “SBC Central Va.”  Raffle tickets are also available through the website.

Please visit the Facebook page for even more information https://www.facebook.com/events/575043952660352/

 THE CHARITABLE VIXEN
