THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION IS CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR DEDICATED ALUMNAE TO JOIN THE ALUMNAE ALLIANCE WORKING COMMITTEE (AAWC).
UPDATE FROM ALUMNAE ALLIANCE WORKING COMMITTEE

The Alumnae Alliance Working Committee is dedicated to creating a new structure to ensure the active engagement of all alumnae in the future of Sweet Briar College. In the past six months, we have accomplished great things en masse; now we must strategically leverage our time, talents and treasure to rebuild Sweet Briar.

The Alumnae Alliance Working Committee process over the last two months focused on how the entire alumnae population can best serve the College. With that guiding principle in mind, we created a mission statement that captures the sense of alumnae engagement and then turned our attention to the formation of a new structure. This proposed structure is inclusive of former Alumnae Association Board members and alumnae who served in various capacities during the spring and summer of 2015, including members of the Saving Sweet Briar Board, Sweet Briar 2.0 and other volunteers; the goal is to incorporate the interests and ideas of all alumnae. It is now time to present the proposed structure and next steps to you. Below are the steps we have taken thus far:

1. The Alumnae Alliance Working Committee (AAWC) was appointed. This committee is made up of 4 board members from Saving Sweet Briar, Inc., 4 former members of the Alumnae Association Board, and Alice Dixon ’82.

2. The AAWC sought input from all alumnae and created the following mission and objective statements:
THE MISSION: The Sweet Briar College Alumnae Alliance fosters and is pivotal to sustaining Sweet Briar’s vibrant learning environment for women. The Alumnae Alliance promotes programs and services that enhance strong bonds of fellowship, mentorship and vision and supports Sweet Briar as an institution dedicated in perpetuity to producing extraordinary scholars and leaders who serve the needs of a contemporary world.

THE OBJECTIVE: The Sweet Briar College Alumnae Alliance promotes programs and services that connect alumnae to the College and to each other to sustain Sweet Briar in perpetuity.

3. The AAWC drafted and approved the intended structure of the Alumnae Alliance. The structure reflects a hub and spokes model. The hub is an Alumnae Council, composed of the original 9 members of the Alumnae Alliance Working Committee, with 6 working groups (spokes) coming out of the Alumnae Council (hub). The eight members of the Working Committee have volunteered to lead specific working groups for the immediate future. There will also be a strategic planning and visioning component that will provide an avenue for all alumnae to share their interest and talents. The founding members of the Alumnae Council will serve for a two-year term. During this time, the Council will develop the procedure for selecting future Council members.

We are seeking nominations for 6 additional members of the Alumnae Council who will also serve as co-chairs of the 6 working groups. All alumnae are encouraged to nominate themselves or each other for these positions. Special skills and interest are desired in these fields:

Media, Marketing & Communications
Development (Fundraising)
Admissions and Retention
Club Structure (Geographic)
Class/Year Structure
General Alumnae Relations

Nominations for these positions can be submitted by clicking on thie attached link.

Once nominations have been received and approved, the Alumnae Alliance Working Committee will take these next steps:

1. Share the structure and membership of these 6 working groups with the Alumnae Relations & Development staff for review and coordination.

2. Forward the structure and membership of the newly-formed Alumnae Alliance to the Advancement Committee of the Board of Directors to consider on September 25.

3. Once approved by the Board of Directors Advancement Committee, the Board of Directors will discuss the proposed structure of the Alumnae Alliance.

This process ensures that the Alumnae Alliance will be fully functioning and begin its work shortly thereafter. The Alumnae Council will operate the Working Groups to bring policy issues to the Board through the Advancement Committee and will work closely with the office of Alumnae Relations and Development. It is crucial that we begin our work right away. Our focus now is to help the administration and Board in the two critical areas of fundraising and student enrollment.

The Alumnae Alliance Working Committee encourages all alumnae to not only nominate additional members for the Alumnae Council, but to also volunteer for one or more of the Working Groups, which will range from serving as an AAR, to helping with fundraising, to developing ideas for academic programming or land use, etc. We will publish information on the SBC website that details the working groups as it becomes available.

Your support of this new model is critical in ensuring that Sweet Briar succeeds in the short and long term. Thank you!

I have had her do fraternity/sorority houses for my kids, houses, and even my daughter’s bridal bouquet as a wedding gift. She can also personalize on the back.

Thank you!

To celebrate the 2015-2016 school year, I am excited to launch the NEW
“Sweet Briar College” 2.0 Keychain!

Buy 4 or More and save 20%. Use code: SBC4ORMORE at checkout.

📚📓✏️📌📚📓✏️📌📚📓

15% of each keychain sold will be donated to Sweet Briar College!

Meg E. Bespoke Keychains are fashionable and durable. They are made out of a 1.5 inch solid wood ball. Each keychain is hand painted a bright pink (a new, slightly different bright pink than the #SaveSweetBriar keychain), complete with a hunter green vixen head, a gem and bright green bow to match (again, a new, slightly different green from the #SaveSweetBriar keychain bow).

Each keychain is finished with a high shine, clear protective coating to prevent chipping from everyday use. (They do withstand those of us who are hard on our keys; however, normal ware will occur over time).

Effective Education: Sweet Briar was one of the 20 colleges selected for Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practice), run by the N.S.S.E. (the National Survey of Student Engagement), which identified institutions excelling at education.  “A time-honored approach to improving productivity is the identification and adaptation of qualities that characterize high-performing organizations. Similarly, any institution of higher education can learn valuable lessons from educationally effective colleges and universities. Toward this end, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) collaborated on Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practice). With support from Lumina Foundation for Education and the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College, this initiative examined the everyday workings of a variety of educationally effective colleges and universities to learn what they do to promote student success.”  Complete results published in Student Success in College, Creating Conditions that Matter.  (Available on ibooks) “At all DEEP schools a unique combination of internal and external factors worked together to crystallize and support an institution wide focus on student success. At some schools, such as Sweet Briar, a salient founding mission and a strong campus culture are touchstones for student success.”  http://nsse.indiana.edu/html/projectDEEP.cfm https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2015/04/06/essay-calling-study-most-valuable-qualities-liberal-arts-colleges , http://nsse.indiana.edu/html/projectDEEP.cfm

A CALL FOR HELP FROM SARAH BETZ BUCCIERO

A Sweet Briar alumna needs our help!

Kaeden, the daughter of Gwendolyn Hickey Babcock ’95 was hospitalized in April for seizures that cause respiratory arrest and paralysis. She spent two weeks in the hospital – much of it in ICU – and was in two different hospitals. She was making progress but the seizures continued in June and caused her to be hospitalized again. She has been at Hershey’s Med in PA and now has been transferred to Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore for six weeks of rehab.

She is currently staying at the Ronald McDonald house.  However, as you all know medical bills will be outrageous even with a good insurance plan.

So please donate at

http://www.gofundme.com/kaeden

to help them with their medical bills.  Any amount is appreciated.

From Sarah – Thank you all in advance for your kindness and for generosity. I know first hand how difficult it is to be in a new city and hospital with a sick child. But I also know how incredibly important it is to feel the love of your Sweet Briar sisters!

((HUGS!!))

Sarah

Please send high resolution color photos of SBC any era and any majors or activities to

After a “Name the Newsetter” contest was held, with many, many good suggestions sent in, the alumnae working group and the alumnae alliance committee selected: The Briar Wire. Two other popular submissions will be used, too. “Sweet News,” was suggested by Claire McDonnell Purnell ’81 and will the the name of a column that focuses on especially exciting and positive news. “Vixen Voices,” which was submitted by several people, will be the name of a column highlighting current students.

((HUGS!!))

Hey y’all! My few remaining crew are helping me with the rest of this documentary but we still need help! Since we are planning a box office release, we really need help funding it! Please just spread the word!! We have less than a month to ensure we hit every deadline!! Thanks to our SBC connections, we have been able to secure screens internationally for a 6 week run starting January 1, 2016 (right when seniors are looking at colleges ;D)! I’d really like all the money the film makes to go right back into Sweet Briar for future students and staff! With that being said, we still have a TON of money to raise and only 30 days to do it – so share the links, spread the love and let the show begin!!

Any questions, comments and suggestions – please feel free to direct them my way!

((HUGS!!))

VIXEN WATCH FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015

VIXEN WATCH FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2015

Happy Wednesday,

We did it!

Pat yourselves on the back.  This is such a major accomplishment.  How many universities or colleges can claim to have such dedicated alumnae.  Donating $12 Million in 6 months is nothing to sneeze at.  And on top of that dedicated alumnae donated to the Angel Fund, Athletics, Vixen Den, Faculty and Staff Dinner, and so much more.

This is something for the history books and we all were part of it. Holla! Holla!

We have overcome a major obstacle, but we still have to make sure that Sweet Briar remains open in perpetuity.  We all donated as much as we possibly could, but we still need to continue sending in donations next year and the years thereafter – perhaps not as much as we have in the past 6 month, but we need to ensure adequate funds to keep Sweet Briar open and functional.  Another way to make sure Sweet Briar continues to educate young women is to recruit students.  If you can participate at a college fair on behalf of Sweet Briar or speak to a prospective student in person or by phone, please click on the link below in the ‘Volunteer for Sweet Briar’ section.

Tomorrow I will post the last Vixen Watch for this week as I will be out of Wifi range for teh next few days.

Starting next week, however, Vixen Watch will be posted on Mondays and Thursdays only, unless there is breaking news.  It has been a pleasure to serve you with news and hopefully keep you informed in the past 6 months.  What an incredible journey it has been.  I am humbled to be in the company of such great women who fought for what is right and never gave up.

I have had her do fraternity/sorority houses for my kids, houses, and even my daughter’s bridal bouquet as a wedding gift. She can also personalize on the back. My friend and colleague, Laura Lenhert, is working on pottery again, so those of you who were interested may now contact her and place your orders. What a great way to commemorate 7/2/15! She can duplicate what she so graciously created for me, or, you can send her a photo of what you would like, and she can do that for you. I have had her do fraternity/sorority houses for my kids, houses, and even my daughter’s bridal bouquet as a wedding gift. She can also personalize on the back. Laura will make a contribution to SSB at a later date based on the number of orders that either reference my name, or SSB. I encourage you to reach out to Laura:

((HUGS!!))

Sarah
